RE: Acceleration of Measures in Light of Climate Emergency Declaration – May 4, 20 meeting

Please accept the following as my comments regarding the Acceleration of Climate Change Actions in response to the Climate Change Emergency Declaration - City Wide (SCM 67/2020) (S 18/2020)

The climate emergency accelerated response plan is a very important plan laying out how to get to the emissions reductions targets laid out in the Community Energy Plan of 2017. In my opinion, it is absolutely crucial that cities continue to act on climate, all the more so in light of COVID19. These measures must recognize that the health of people cannot be separated from the health of the Earth.

One of the most important provisions include ensuring that all administrative reports to the City Council moving forward have a climate risks/climate assessment provision.

Another crucial point is that it would also create a $150,000 (for starters) Climate Reserve Fund that staff could leverage for various funds.

In your decision at the May 04 meeting, it might be helpful to recognize that cities that are seen to be at the forefront on climate change adaptation and mitigation are going to be better placed to get funding for infrastructure etc. from other levels of government in the post-COVID recovery.

Sincerely, Rita Haase
