Boston Strong - 2013
As runners were racing toward the finish line, tragedy struck when two explosions went off in the final stretch of Boylston Street. Responding heroically, medical personnel, volunteers, law enforcement, and spectators quickly came to the aid of the many injured. Five lives were lost due to the explosions and attacks in Boston. In the aftermath of April 15, 2013, runners and citizens from around the globe united as one to celebrate the strength and resiliency of the community. “Boston Strong” became a rallying cry for all to gather around, exemplifying our determination to prevail stronger through adversity.
Van Dyk’s Victories - 2014
South African Ernst van Dyk is the all-time leader in Boston victories, having captured 10 wheelchair titles between 2001 and 2014. Van Dyk has finished on the podium 17 times, with his most recent title coming seven years ago.
Swiss Speed - 2017
Swiss stars Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär both cruised to course record and world best times in the wheelchair division, finishing in 1:18:04 and 1:28:17, respectively. The Swiss sweep set a new precedent for speed in the wheelchair division.
Meb Wins - 2014
Patriots’ Day 2014 was one to remember, as inspiring storylines played out in full force. Supported by thousands, America’s Meb Keflezighi broke from the field early and ran alone out front. Spurred on by the thoughts of those affected by the 2013 tragedy, Meb ran to the chants of “USA! USA! USA!” Upon breaking the tape, Keflezighi became the first American men’s open winner since 1983.
