12. The proposed brick detail/coursing differs from the existing in the following ways:
-
Modify articulation at brick piers, at east and west facade corners, by increasing outside projecting edges from 4" to 8" width, and reducing the width of recessed panels between edges, from 16"to 8'2 The existing, thinner outer edge is visually slender and is not a brick detail common to buildings of this vintage. The design also terminates the recessed center panel, of these piers, at a slightly lower elevation, to allow for the rowlock course to continue from building comer to building comer.
-
Increase brick coursing depth at parapet from two courses to five courses for the section of wall between corner piers. This is the more traditional proportion
-
Revise piers, located between 1“story doors and window openings, to delete recessed brick panel and reconstructed piers with a consistent flush face. A single course of rowlock brick is provided below stone capitals. This modification is intended to provide a hierarchy for pier columns, to reinforce the corner piers as“bookends" and the intermediate piers as secondary, structural elements. This change also helps to conceal the narrow width of the center pier.
-
d. The existing, uninterrupted soldier course. spanning the width of building above 2mi story windows, is changed to become three soldier-course lintels, with one Iinlel over each of the individual window openings. This is a more traditional brick coursing and better emphasizes the window openings.
Existing nameplate stone, keystones, over 2"" story windows, window sills and column plinth blocks and capitals at first floor piers, will be salvaged. Sound limestone units will be reused (repaired where feasible) or replaced with new, like materials if repair is not feasible. Reused limestone units will require paint removal, using non—abrasive Joss System.
Facade brick masonry will be relaid in stretcher bond with header and rowlock banding, as shown in the drawing.
Remove existing paint from side walls and rear wall of the building. examine the condition of wall and provide new breathable paint to match the new brick veneer.
