In the course of the tour of Crawford Yard, and specifically the truck maintenance garage, the MOL Ergonomist noted a platform ladder the bottom step of which was damaged. In order to reduce the risk of a worker being injured while using this piece of equipment, the Ergonomist issued an order to the Corporation to ensure the ladder is maintained in good condition. The ladder was removed from the work area the same day and stored in such a manner as to prevent a worker from using this equipment until it could be disposed of.
No other contraventions were noted throughout the remainder of the site visits on March 5th 2020. We anticipate an additional visit will occur involving the MOL Ergonomist when the MOL resumes their usual compliance monitoring activities.
Risk Analysis:
Resource Risks: As the work required to comply with the order was complied with at the time it was issued, there are no resource risks identified.
Timing Risks: The risk of injury to a worker due to unsafe equipment at the Crawford Yard site was mitigated by the removal of the damaged equipment from the worksite on the date the order was issued and as such there is NO further risk identified.
Cross- Corporation Risks: Administration and the Joint Health and Safety Committees and Health and Safety Representatives will continue to monitor our workplaces for proactive identification of MSD hazards. The Corporation will continue to provide mandatory training to make workers aware of MSD hazards and how to prevent them through safe work practices. Despite these efforts there continues to be the POSSIBLE outcome of a worker suffering an MSD-type injury given the repetitive nature of many of our jobs and as such the risk is MODERATE.
Community Impact Risks: No risks assessed in relation to Community Impact.
