Vancouver Coastal Health
In early 2020, Vancouver Coastal Health released a summary of available evidence on e-scooter injuries from several sources ("E-Scooter Evidence Summary" by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Public Health and Vancouver General Hospital Trauma Services). This summary outlined the findings from a number of reports and studies, including several of those listed previously in this memo. Key points from VCH's evidence summary not already provided in the discussion of other reports are as follows:
- The US CDC study found that for every 100,000 e-scooter trips, 20 riders were injured. At this rate, e-scooter use is 100 times riskier than walking, and 13 times riskier than biking.
- Based on US data, the death rate is low for shared e-scooters and bicycles, but the death rate for rideshare scooters is approximately six times higher than the rate for rideshare bicycles:
- o Rideshare scooter death rate: 1 per 10.75 million trips
- o Rideshare bicycle death rate: 1 per 61.5 million trips
- The proportion of injured e-scooter riders who were impaired by alcohol varied significantly from study to study (18% in one case, 48% in another).
