City of Calgary
In a City of Calgary report ("Shared E-Bike and E-Scooter Mid-Pilot Report", December 2019), City staff reported that in the 3-month period of July through September 2019:
There were 33 e-scooter injuries requiring an ambulance. 7 of these injuries required admission to hospital; the remainder were treated in the emergency department:
- o 1 of these injuries was to a pedestrian; 32 were to e-scooter riders
- o 2 of the 33 incidents involved a motor vehicle
- o The most common causes of injury were speed, loss of control, hitting a pothole, and hitting a fixed object
- o 1 of the 33 involved e-scooter riders was wearing a helmet
- o The average age of the involved e-scooter riders was 34
Injury rates for Calgary during this period:
- o 1 in 1,500 e-scooter trips resulted in an emergency room visit
- o 1 in 100,000 e-scooter trips resulted in hospitalization
