Report S214/2019
Please allow me to comment on report Item 8.3 with regard to the Duff-Bâby Mansion at 221 Mill St.
My name is Dr. Larry Kulisek. I am Professor Emeritus at the University of Windsor and taught local history there for more than forty years.
I fully support Option 1 in Administration's Report to the Standing Committee, that would have the City lease the main floor of the Duff-Baby Mansion from the Ontario Heritage Trust.
Improving public access to the community's only surviving 18th century building would be a boon to the City's tourist industry. When coupled with the facilities already in place, i.e. the Francois Baby House, Mackenzie Hall, Assumption Church and St. John's Church, and the soon to be placed and open original streetcar, you would be creating an historical destination that would attract visitors from across North America.
The history of Sandwich, in Windsor, is both long and significant. The structures I've mentioned above help to tell that history to its residents and visitors to the area. Improving access and interpretation of the Duff-Baby House would definitely support and improve the current situation. Please recommend that City Council approves Option 1.
Sincerely,
Dr. Larry Kulisek, Professor Emeritus
