IN 1943, IN PREPARATION FOR THE ALLIED INVASION OF EUROPE, THE RCN SHARED IN ATTACKS ON ENEMY WARSHIPS AND WATERBORNE TRAFFIC ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL.

WHEN THE VAST ALLIED ARMADA ADVANCED ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL ON D-DAY 1944, 60 CANADIAN DESTROYERS, FRIGATES, CORVETTES MINESWEEPERS AND MOTOR TORPEDO BOATS WERE THERE.

THE RCN SUFFERED 2,210 FATALTIES AND LOST 33 WARSHIPS, THE RCAF LOST 752 AIR CREW MEMBERS, THE RCMP LOST 10 MEMBERS WHILE THE MERCHANT NAVY LOST 1,629 CANADIANS AND NEWFOUNDLANDERS AND 70 SHIPS IN THIS THEATRE OF OPERATIONS.

EACH YEAR ON THE 1ST SUNDAY IN MAY, CANADA AND ITS NAVAL COMMUNITY COMMEMORATES THOSE LOST AT SEA DURING WORLD WAR TWO.

THEY UPHOLD THE LEGACY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC BY PLEDGING THEMSELVES, "READY, AYE, READY" .
