- If an IEP document looks different than those you typically see, the case-manager can help you navigate the information presented. IEP templates vary from region to region, but each form contains the same required information regulated by federal law.
- If there are special tools or assistive technology (AT) devices listed within the IEP, such as pencil grips, communication boards, special writing paper and so on, the casemanager can help locate equipment and support your understanding.
- If you are seeking details about the IEP, such as how the student is progressing with goals or when the next IEP meeting is due or scheduled, the case-manager can provide you with that information.
- If the IEP needs adjustment, such as adding an area of need or updating a goal or a support, check in with the case-manager or service provider.
- Maintain collaborative partnerships and the dynamic possibilities provided through combined energies and skills of all team members. Every team member has a unique perspective and area of expertise to share and learn from. IEP pages hold a wealth of information providing a pathway of access and engagement possibilities for student learning. Be on the lookout for helpful insights from parents, student and educa
tors or service providers. Observations about special interests and strengths, results from evaluations, and much more are often documented in the IEP. Input shared by family is often listed within a general notes page in the IEP. Qualities of deeper understanding, thoughtful adjustment and effective communication are potentiated through positive collaborative practices.
Welcoming your students back to school by creating an inviting and inclusive learning environment will go a long way in inspiring student outcomes and a successful year. To IEP teams across our nation, I wish you an amazing and inspirational school year. •
