GENERAL EDUCATOR'S BACK-TO-SCHOOL TOOLBOX:

SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS THROUGH THE IEP TEAM

BY ANGELA SHAW

The relaxed days of summer are over and now we are back-to-school! Across our nation, teachers are revving up for the 2022-23 school year with a goal of inspiring students' love of learning and improved learning outcomes.

Teachers are busy reviewing student records, organizing curriculum and crafting inspirational bulletin boards. The actions of preplanning for a student, holds a vital step toward creating a path to success for all, particularly for students who have special needs. For general education teachers welcoming students who receive special education services, one of the most important things you can do to pave the way for an engaged and accessible learning experience, and comply with federal law, is acquaint yourself with your students' Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Although a teacher may not have been a participant in the most recent IEP their student arrives with, the plan remains

valid and active until consideration at the next meeting. Your student's IEP is a customized learning plan unique to them and supported by federal special education law known as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA regulations convey that each provider responsible for implementation of the IEP has access to the plan. This includes specific accommodations, modifications, and supports to be provided for the child in accordance with the IEP. The IEP team meets and updates the plan at least annually. If clarity or access to the IEP is needed, the best place to begin is with your student's special education teacher.
