Dear Boston Marathon Participants and Friends,
On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors, supporters, and volunteers, we thank you for participating in the monumental 125th running of the Boston Marathon. Whether you completed 26.2 miles on the traditional course or virtually in your neighborhood, we welcome you to the Boston Marathon family of finishers and congratulate you on reaching the finish line.
Each year's Boston Marathon is remembered in its own meaningful way. From close competition to challenging weather, oftentimes one theme resonates when recalling a particular year's race. The 125th Boston Marathon will be remembered for the triumphant return to racing, as 910 days had passed between in-person editions of the Boston Marathon. Thanks to your passion, dedication, and resilience, the return to racing and first fall edition of the Boston Marathon was a resounding success.
In Boston, runners and their families brought a vibrant energy which lifted the community up unlike any event in the past two years. Around the world, participants gathered friends, training partners, and supporters to celebrate the pursuit of athletic achievements. No matter where you were, the spirit of the Boston Marathon was on full display.
More than 22,000 participants crossed handmade finish lines at home as part of the Virtual 125th Boston Marathon held October 8-10, setting the stage for 15,473 more to complete their own 26.2mile journey from Hopkinton to Boston on October 11. Together, all athletes were part of the largest and arguably most meaningful Boston Marathon in history. We hope you wear your signature Boston Marathon unicorn medal with pride.
As we reflect on our own personal journeys to the start and finish line, we again thank you for joining us and being part of this year's special event. We wish you all the best in your future running endeavors and hope to see you on the roads of Boston in April for the 126th Boston Marathon.
Sincerely,
Michael P. O'Leary, M.D. Chairman of the Board
