BOSTON: Virtual Editions

In celebration of the 125th running of the Boston Marathon, this year’s race features a special virtual component open to anyone over the age of 18. For the first time since the centennial running in 1996, runners could enter to be part of the Boston Marathon experience without a qualifying time—a move that celebrates the sport while honoring the milestone anniversary.

"We anticipated having a reduced field size for the in-person road race on October 11 but wanted to celebrate and honor the 125th running of the Boston Marathon through this virtual race,” said Tom Grilk, President and C.E.O. of the B.A.A.

While the concept of virtual racing was brought to the forefront of the sport in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been part of the Boston Marathon fabric since the early 2000s.
