October 2021
Greetings Boston Marathon Runners, Spectators, and Sponsors:
As We couldn't be more excited to return back to this annual tradition. I am so proud of the Boston Marathon team, athletes, sponsors, and supporters for bringing us back together. s Mayor of this great city, I am so pleased to welcome back the Boston Marathon in its 125th year!
We are thrilled to return to the roads for this monumental and iconic road race. Because of the determination and commitment of the many marathoners, volunteers, and supporters, we have the opportunity to come together again despite a challenging year and a half. We remain resilient. We remain #BostonStrong
The Boston Marathon is the oldest existing annual marathon in the world, with its first run in 1897. While the course has remained primarily the same since its early years, the marathon itself has continued to adjust to meet the moment.
I want to thank the Boston Athletic Association for the steps they are taking due to COVID-19 to help ensure a safe race. I also want to extend my gratitude to each spectator, volunteer and runner who is doing the same — including the 30,000 individuals who will be running a virtual Boston Marathon on that day. We all have an important role to play to make sure this is a safe and successful event.
With those virtual participants, this year will be the largest Marathon in Boston history, with runners from all 50 states and over 100 countries. We couldn’t be more excited to return back to this annual tradition. I am so proud of the Boston Marathon team, athletes, sponsors, and supporters for bringing us back together. I wish all of the runners the best of luck. Stay safe.
Sincerely,
Mayor Kim Janey
