JULY

SKY WATCH: Earth arrives at its annual far point from the Sun—aphelion—on the 5th. When overhead, the Sun appears 7 percent dimmer than it looked in January. In the western sky after sunset, Venus and Mars meet in conjunction on the 11th, with both just to the left of the crescent Moon. These three nearest bodies to Earth stand about 10 degrees high during mid-twilight. The Moon moves on, but the two planets come very close together on the 12th and 13th; Mars's dimness at magnitude 1.84 means that binoculars should be used for the very best view. On the 24th, the Moon forms a nice triangle with Saturn on the right and Jupiter on the left. Jupiter is below the Moon on the 25th.
