Administration has identified up to 15 additional public locations for EV units and continues to monitor potential grant funding which may assist in moving these forward. At this time, the focus is on implementation of the 12 charging stations, which will also provide feedback on usage.
ii. Offering Financial Assistance to Install Charging Stations
To address increasing at home and at work charging EV infrastructure, some municipalities are considering encouraging their installation through a financial incentive program such as a Community Improvement Plan or Retro-fit Program.
For example, Strathroy-Caradoc is considering a financial incentive “intended to incentivise environmentally conscious development practices and improvements that reduce the impact of our build environment on the natural environment. This program will encourage the pursuit of improvements to buildings and properties that incorporate Low Impact Design (LID) elements, green technologies, sustainable building materials, energy efficiency, and/or active transportation”.
Under the program, the installation of permanent electric vehicle charging stations would be eligible for a rebate (up to 50% of the project) in the following uses:
-
Commercial
-
Office
-
Institutional
-
Mixed-use
-
Recreational (if directly associated with a business)
Through the City of Toronto’s Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) homeowners can get a low-interest loan of up to $75,000 to cover the cost of home energy improvements. The installation of electric vehicle charging stations (Level 2) is one such home energy improvement.
