The survey was supposed to be available to all curlers at Roseland. However, it was widely reported to the Roseland Curling Committee that the entire membership of the Monday Night Granite league was unable to complete the survey. Several members asked to be provided with a new link to the survey, but these requests went unanswered.
In addition, the presentation of data from the survey was done inappropriately. For example, there were two separate questions asking: 1) If curlers intended to play in the upcoming season despite COVID, and 2) If curlers would sign a waiver relieving Roseland of liability in order to play in the upcoming season. Data from these two questions was subsequently combined to produce a far smaller percentage count of curlers who were expected to return in the upcoming season. Anyone could predict that a survey respondent answering “no” to the first question about intending to play would also answer “no” to the second question about signing a waiver and was, therefore, being double counted negatively in the board’s statistics.
Finally, despite many requests to Roseland administration, the Roseland Curling Committee was unable to review the survey results. We have no idea of the survey response rate and were not privy to how the survey data was compiled and used by administration or the board.
The Roseland Curling Committee, however, took a poll of our league membership by each League President and is happy to report the following projection of curling participation for the upcoming 2020/21 season:
Curling League | Projected Participation in 20/21 |
---|---|
Monday Morning Seniors | 36 players |
Monday Afternoon Seniors | 36 players |
Monday Night Granite | 40 players |
Tuesday Night Skips Entry | 56 players |
Wednesday Night Mixed | No data but last year they had 48 players |
Thursday Morning Senior Men | 48 players |
Thursday Night Skips Entry | 48 players |
Friday Morning Seniors | 36 players |
Friday Afternoon Seniors | 36 players |
Friday Night Mixed | 48 players |
High school curling, junior curling, weekend rentals and bonspiels (i.e. tournaments) were excluded from our projections as we do not have confirmation from Roseland administration if they would be willing to resume these activities under COVID restrictions. In a normal year these activities were all very heavily attended and filled out various “free” ice times throughout the season.
Call to Remain Active throughout the Winter Months
Windsor city Mayor, Drew Dilkens, was recently quoted in the media justifying the importance of safe winter activities and their impact on our overall health in the local community. He said, “We know that physical fitness and mental health go hand in hand. As we prepare for cooler temperatures and a potential second wave of COVID-19, maintaining active, healthy lifestyles will become even more
