The following is a summary of observations, public safety issues that should be addressed, and recommended actions to be taken regarding the physical safety and security conditions associated with the proposed new Cannabis retail store. Information provided here is based on the universally known principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) and both vehicular and pedestrian traffic impact, according to prevailing data and known experience in forecasting public safety impacts.

Situational Safety & Criminogenic Conditions

The property is situated in the Walkerville area, integrated with other commercial uses, where steady volumes of vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement are experienced. Its physical placement and orientation next to both a convenience store and liquor store does present some anticipated public safety situations that may need addressing. Specifically, these include:

• The physical placement of the store is contiguous to other retail establishments, most notably a liquor store and a convenience store that attracts activity across many hours of the day – including vulnerable populations such as children and seniors. A positive feature is the building’s site placement does offer very good ongoing natural surveillance capability to the front of the business from any discernible distance, via the busy Walker at Ottawa intersection. This encourages more accountable activity around the property.
