As a taxpayer in this city (Ward 5), I can tell you that I adamantly disagree with the chosen hospital location, for many reasons:
1. No accountable site location process - an ill-conceived site was chosen for no known reason (worthless farm land purchased for several million taxpayers’ dollars);
2. Reduced accessibility - the traffic pattern around said location is already beyond full capacity. At any time of day or night that a person tries to drive to/from this area of the city, they are currently seriously delayed by overflow traffic. There are several big box stores and an airport on these streets making for excessive traffic snarls and accidents. It will be difficult for buses to access the area due to the traffic congestion meaning that people who do not drive will not be able to easily access the facility and it’s resources.
3. Lack of appropriate healthcare for all residents - closing two emergency wards in two separate locations in the city to amalgamate into one emergency ward in a hard-to-access location will be a nightmare for many. This limits accessibility to adequate healthcare for the majority of the population.
4. Reduction in overall quality of healthcare - promised 24 hour urgent care facility on old Grace Hospital site has been scrapped in lieu of a housing complex for “international people”.
The proposed location will cause nothing but transportation problems for people who need medical help. The choice of this location adds insult to injury!
