art
SATURDAY: Local artist Bekky Beukes is an inspiration to artists everywhere — or she should be. She's managed to work something out that so many creatives wrestle with: How to not be a starving artist. She's the rare breed who can make inspiring art and also promote it. One of the reasons her art resonates with us has to do with her honesty. For example, in discussing her upcoming show, debris, Beukes says her work is about the "emotional interpretation of transition, something I look forward to and get anxious over all at once." We've previewed some of the work, and the quiet colors and large-scale paintings will bring softness and light to the Blue Goose that should be fascinating on the strength of the juxtaposition alone. Meet the artist on Aug. 5 at the opening reception; exhibit hangs for four weeks. The Blue Goose, 48 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. St. N., St. Pete. Aug. 5: 8 p.m. local.cltampa.com. —Cathy Salustri

FRIDAY: It's rare that we start to hyperventilate when we open a press release, but this one did it. On Nov. 3 at 8 p.m., Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark will take the stage at Tampa Theatre with their live version of one of our favorite podcasts, My Favorite Murder. If you don't listen to MFM, you should. These funny and smart women go over famous (and not-sofamous) murders with empathy and as much humor as you want in a true crime podcast. They have a posse of "murderinos" on Facebook, Entertainment Weekly loves them and they're coming to see us — you and I — at long last. (We stalk their website waiting for potential notice of a nearby appearance.) Tickets go on sale at noon, and they will sell out ridiculously fast. Tampa Theatre will also offer a few VIP meet-and-greet packages. Those packages include a seat in the fifirst fifive rows, a post-show VIP event and — squee! — a photo op with the queens of murder. You also land an autographed tour poster and a VIP laminate. Tampa Theatre, 711 N. Franklin St., Tampa. Aug. 4: 12 p.m. $38.50-$153.50. 813-274-8286. cltampa.com. —CS

THURSDAY: Remember going back to school after a long summer break? Yeah, sure, we were bummed that our summers of sleeping in and hanging around the mall with our friends were over, but we were excited, too: We had new clothes, new backpacks and we'd get to show off our super-cool Trapper Keeper. Of course, if your parents didn't have money for that, back to school sucked hard, because every time you saw a friend showing off their new duds, you'd wince a little and shift last year's backpack to your other shoulder, hoping they wouldn't notice. Help kids like that by bringing donations of cash, backpacks or school supplies to the Back Pack to School and Buzzed Spelling Bee school supply drive and spelling bee. Donate and get a free beer, discounts on food, free chair massage and all kinds of other goodies. They prefer cash and unisex kids' and teen backpacks, but if you want to bring school supplies, please bring at least $20 worth of the following: Three-ring binders — both 1.5" and 3" — college- and wide-rule notebook paper, rulers, pencils, pencil cases, erasers, glue sticks, scissors, pocket folders, colored pencils, tissues and scientifific calculators. Plus, you're doing a good thing for kids who don't deserve to be made fun of for being poor, which is way better than a free beer. 81Bay Brewing Co., 4465 W. Gandy Blvd., Tampa. musical
TUESDAY: Sure, it started with one guy, but it's everyone's music now. Coming to Tampa this week, Broadway show Motown The Musical tells Motown founder Berry Gordy's story. Talk about the American Dream realized: Gordy was a boxer who became the music industry superstar that introduced Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson, to name but a few, to the world. Amid the racial unrest of the 1960s, Motown gave Americans something they could have in common, no matter the color of their skin: music. The musical not only tells this story, it includes Motown classics like "My Girl" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Carol Morsani Hall at the Straz, 1010 N. WC MacInnes Pl., Tampa. film
WEDNESDAY: Thirty fifilmmaking teams will enter the Thunderdome that is the TampaSt. Petersburg 48 Hour Film Project. Only one will emerge! That's because the competition is fifierce between the teams, which consist of amateurs, professionals and anyone else who paid the entrance fee. Here's the gambit: At 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, each team is assigned a genre (comedy, drama, romance, road trip, et cetera), a character (kangaroo trainer, plumber, Creative Loafifing scribe) and a single line of dialogue that must be heard in the fifilm. The rest is up to them: They write a script, cast the movie, shoot the movie, edit the movie and turn it in on or before the 48-hour deadline: 7 p.m. Sunday. You can watch all the fifilms the following Wednesday. The audience favorite might get the chance to go on to Filmapalooza, the 48 Hour Film Project's Oscars, next spring in Paris.
