visart Get real
DAILY: If you've ever seen a painting and had to ask yourself, wait, is that a photo?, well, welcome to hyperrealistic painting (and you thought it was when an artist painted got hopped up on Jolt! Cola, didn't you?) Hell, odds are you've seen examples of this and not realized you were seeing a painting. For those of us who cannot paint a straight line on a wall, much less realistic images, much much less hyperrealistic ones, this is pretty cool. Even people who can paint well — known to us as that rare breed we call "artists" — fifind it amazing. Photorealism: 50 years of Hyperrealistic Painting gives all of us a look at how this genre has evolved since the late 1960s. Featuring 30 hyperrealistic painters who paint the ordinary — think diners and chromework on cars and motorcycles as well as portraits — this exhibit will make only one American stop on its international tour, and it's in our backyard, which is also pretty kickass. Take that, Wynwood. Tampa Museum of Art, 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. Through Oct. 13: Mon.-Thurs., 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Fri., 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; and Sat.-Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. $5-$15; Fri., 4-10 p.m., PWYC. 813-274-8130. local.cltampa.com. —Cathy Salustri
benefit Hole in one fore the books
SATURDAY: Hey, when's the last time you played mini-golf (or, for us old-schoolers, "putt-putt")? The Largo Library will have a one-day-only recycled/reclaimed mini-golf course inside the library (because Florida in July). This miniature golf course is unlike most, because the Largo Library's teen volunteers made it using reclaimed items. Also, most commercial mini-golf courses 'round these parts have a crashed airplane and a pit full of baby gators waiting for you to feed them (hey, how could that ever go wrong, right?); this annual 18-hole challenge won't cost you as much as the typical mini-golf game and the money will support the teen programs at the library. So your money goes to teens who love to read instead of a faceless corporation that enslaves baby alligators? Why aren't you there yet? Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Dr., Largo. July 29: 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. $2 per person, per round; $6 per group of four, per round. 727-587-6715. local.cltampa.com. —CS
film All hail the Sausage King of Chicago
SATURDAY: No matter how many times we see this movie, it never gets old. A boyishly sexy Matthew Broderick (who may also be a sociopath, but what teenage boy isn't?), a pre-rhinoplasty Jennifer Grey, cameos from a pre-crazy Charlie Sheen and post-Nixon Ben Stein... seriously, why isn't this movie playing 24 hours a day on what we'd like to call the Ferris Bueller Channel? For Generation X, Ferris Bueller's Day Off is the life we all secretly wanted to live. For baby boomers, it was a sweet romanticization of the failings of youth. For millennials, this is what happens when you you don't take the right to be an asshole for granted (we had to work for it, dammit). Generation Z? We see you making a remake of this 1986 classic. Until then, hop into the pool, grab a summer drink, and escape into the world of Ferris Bueller. The Hollander Hotel, 421 4th Ave. N., St. Pete. July 29: 7 p.m. 727-873-7900. local.cltampa.com. —CS
food Wat's up?
Sunday: You've been talking about going there for ages. You've heard all your friends talk about it. You know you'd love it. But you haven't gone yet. Why the hell not? OK, so maybe references to Hell aren't quite appropriate when we're discussing Buddhism, but you get the idea. The Sunday Market at Wat Tampa is probably the best (and most fun way) to taste a variety of Thai foods — and to buy Thai products, including coffee and tea, fruit trees and vegetables. On site you can eat tasty dishes like grilled pork; chicken on a stick; "Phat Thai" (veggies and noodles); beef or pork noodle soup; chicken curry dishes with veggies; and egg rolls, as well as fried bananas, taro root and sweet potatoes. Even though you can feast like a king, you're gonna want to leave room for dessert. Best part? Volunteers do all the work, which means the Buddhist Temple, not a corporate chain, gets the benefifits. And you get the yum. Wat Mongkolratanaram, 5306 Palm River Rd., Tampa. July 30: 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Free; money for goodies. 813-621-1669. local.cltampa.com. —CS
preserve Well, isn't that... special
NEXT THURSDAY: St. Pete residents know St. Pete is special. Even those of us who don't live in St. Pete proper recognize that St. Pete has a... quality. Not a Chandler Bing-like quality (ahem, although...) but more of an ephemeral quality that makes the 'Burg... special. How do you defifine it? St. Petersburg Preservation's going to try, and they need your help. They're going to celebrate what makes St. Pete special at Keep St. Pete Special: the arts, preservation, local indie businesses, neighborhoods and more. Mix that up with music, shufflfleboard and a roving videographer who will likely ask you to tell the world why you think St. Pete's special and you have yourself a parttay, St. Pete style. We're gonna say this, although in St. Pete it's implied: There will also be food trucks, local brews, art and kid-friendly stuff. St. Pete Shufflfleboard, 559 Mirror Lake Dr. N., St. Pete.
